Understanding the Different Types of Materials Used in Ball Valves Manufacturing

Brass and stainless steel grades are commonly used in the manufacture of ball valve body; while either a CF8m or stainless steel grade 316 are used for making the ball and shaft.. This is for those industries that require a low or high temperature or corrosive applications.

In terms of standard set material, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is used as this is chemically inert to a variety of fluids, and has impressive coefficient friction of less than 0.1. However, this loses its rigidity when exposed to high temperatures.

So for higher rigidity requirements, some manufacturers use:

  • Powder filled PTFEs
  • Polyetherketone
  • Nylon

Through the use of these materials, the maximum service temperature and rigidity is increased.

What are the different body designs of a ball valve?

You should also be knowledgeable of the different body designs of a ball valve when buying one. Here is a simple guide for you to remember.

One Piece Ball Valve Design

As a single piece design with BSP threads at each end. It’s design gives you minimised leak paths but inherent strength.

Two Piece Ball Valve Design

This is a popular design among those looking for lower manufacturing costs and ease of maintenance. This features a body split into two pieces. It is commonly used because of its component weight, which is often needed in smaller equipment sizes.

Three Piece Ball Valve Design

This is commonly used in applications where the valve needs to be cleaned. It is a rare valve design wherein the ball is retained by four bolts. This is often used for applications where the critical valve can still be maintained even while the valve is in the pipeline.

CONCLUSION

Ball valves are important in many industrial applications. It is often found in everyday services of these industries involving the use of water, acids, natural gas, solvents; and even those that work with arduous services such as hydrogen peroxide, oxygen and other gases.
