Ball valves are spherical closure units that controls the flow of fluids. It has a central port called the bore, which allows fluid to flow through it when it is in the open position. However, if this is rotated to 90 degrees, then the bore becomes perpendicular to the flow path which then closes the valve and prevents fluid to pass through.
This is a reliable bubble tight sealing mechanism that is perfect for water, oil or gas applications. It is commonly made of brass and is made more durable through nickel plating.
Types of Ball Valves Based on Exit Directions
There are different types of Ball Valves. This includes:
Two-way ball valves
This is the most common type of ball valves. It allows fluid and gas to flow in a linear direction from the inlet to its exit point.
Three-way ball valves
As the name implies, it allows fluid and gas to exit out in two points.
Types of Ball Valves based on Ball Movement
Another way of classifying ball valves is through its ball movement. These are grouped as:
Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve
This is easily identified because of the additional mechanical anchor on the top and bottom of its ball. It is commonly used for large and high pressure valves.
Floating Ball Valve
This type of ball valve is attached to a stem that allows it to float slightly downstream, thus its name. This movement creates pressure against the seat producing a positive seal.
Rising Stem Ball Valve
This works via the principle of a tilt-and-turn operation. Thus eliminating seal rubbing, which is the common cause of many valve failure.
This also results to fast, low torque and long term reliability in terms of its efficiency and performance.
Common Ball Valves Applications
Ball valves are commonly used for the following applications:
- Transmission and storage
- Industrial plants
- Gas processing
